SXSW Day 5: It's the end of the world as we know it

SXSW 2019 has confirmed the extent to which technology will impact every aspect of our lives in deep and profound ways. I’m 15 sessions in, spanning a range of topics from flying vehicles, smart cities, neuro-science, nano-technology, to how the CIA uses creativity to solve complex counter-terrorism challenges.

SXSW Day 1: From pixels to people

South by Southwest (SXSW), the much-anticipated interactive, film and music festival kicks off today. Picking up the key themes for marketers from SXSW

The long plane ride home from Austin to Australia gives ample time to reflect and consolidate thoughts from SXSW. Or so you’d think, but it’s not an easy job - the variety of topics, points of view, innovations, new technologies (and vapourware) make it hard to boil down into digestible chunks. That’s the beauty of SXSW - it’s a full-on intellectual assault as the interactive, music, film, technology and media industries come together to digest and discuss the future.

You’re doing it wrong: Emotion doesn’t mean emotional

If you’ve been around advertising long enough, you’ve probably seen (or written) a slide which says: “They won’t remember what you say, they’ll remember how you made them feel.” But it’s wrong. Our understanding of how emotion is used in advertising has been ill informed and poorly applied.

Why does brand execution often kill creativity?

The launch of a new brand, or indeed a rebrand, is a transformation to be greeted with fanfare. So why is it that once the brand has launched, the brand execution phase can also be the moment at which you kill its creativity?
