The University of Western Australia has poached Crown Perth’s GM of marketing to become its next chief marketing officer.
Owen Davies is currently the general manager of marketing for Crown Perth, with a focus on marketing strategy, planning, brand, campaign and marketing communications. He will join the tertiary institution as CMO on 4 December, reporting into deputy vice-chancellor of community and engagement, Professor Kent Anderson.
Davies has been with Crown since 2007 and has more than 20 years of brand, marketing, market research and strategy experience overall, previously working for global market research firm, Synovate.
In a statement, UWA said the appointment comes as the institution seeks to enhance its brand image and grow student numbers. Davies replaces Karen Carriero, who has taken up a role at the University of British Columbia.
The UWA noted Davies’ track record of delivering marketing plans that have driven strong growth for both WA and national brands. Among his career milestones are driving the successful big for a Perth-based Super Rugby team in 2004, the creation of the Western Force brand, leading the launch of Crown Perth in 2012, and helping to develop new research, analytics and strategy platforms for Crown nationally.
A UWA spokesperson said Davies will lead a team of more than 200 in the brand, marketing and recruitment division.
“This appointment is a key part of the University’s commitment to recruit the best students and academics from around the world,” the spokesperson told CMO. “We are currently searching the globe to fill 50 new positions, made up of academic and research staff who want to join us on our mission of becoming a top 50 University by 2050.
“We also recognise that student recruitment, both international and domestic, is increasingly competitive and the appointment of Owen Davies reflects the University’s commitment in this area.”
