How artificial intelligence is transforming marketing

In an industry known for its love of buzzwords and hype, artificial intelligence (AI) has become marketing’s new ‘big data’. But where big data ultimately led to new layers of complexity, AI promises the opposite.
Big data forced marketers to become data scientists (or hire them, if they could be found), but AI holds out the hope that marketers may get to go back to doing what they signed up for the in the first place.
Recent months have seen technology providers such as Salesforce, Oracle and Microsoft bring new AI-based technologies to market, promising to derive insights and improve conversions by mimicking the processes of the human brain in software.
Salesforce, for example, is rolling out its Einstein AI technology to provide functions such as product recommendations within the Commerce Cloud, email content recommendations within its Marketing Cloud, and predictive forecasting tools for sales managers with its Sales Cloud.
According to Salesforce’s Asia-Pacific head of product marketing, Derek Laney, Einstein is a response to the desire of many marketers to improve processes and gain greater insight through data science – one often stifled through the difficulty many organisations have in hiring data scientists.
“If you think about what a marketer wants to do, it is probably not to learn data science technologies,” Laney tells CMO. “The key problems they are trying to address are what’s the right method or channel to interact with the customer, what is the right message or content, and when is the right time. And applying data science to those three problems can make a marketer much more productive.
“What we are doing is understanding domain problems within CRM and solving them one by one, then making that available to all our customers as a service.”
While marketers often create rules-based systems for interacting with customers, Laney says this can be automated with AI. The machine can look at individual’s behavioural data and make recommendations without having to create rules.
“I am never going to know why this individual customer got this this particular message at this time, because there is no particular rule that’s been followed,” Laney says. “The machine is using data science to match that in a much more fuzzy way.
“That is going to be a lot more scalable and productive for a marketer rather than doing a thousand AB tests to get the best set of segmentation and optimisation.”
Oracle has also bought into the AI revolution through its acquisition of the Maxymiser testing and optimisation tool, which is being married up against other assets such as its Bluekai third-party data marketplace.
“Our technology can automate and self-learn what works best from a marketing execution point-of-view, and it can do that with a single objective of increasing your response rates,” says Oracle’s regional vice-president of sales for its Marketing Cloud platform, Will Griffith. “We have been developing and extending Maxymiser and fuelling it with more and more data, because more data equals better results.”
The startup AI opportunity
The declining price point of the technology required to run AI-based algorithms is also opening opportunities for a raft of new startups, with some surprising capabilities.

It is still not really doing the last ten feet, which is taking the data and moving it into something that is implementation-ready.”
Nugit’s Smart Story Technology takes data points across an organisation or campaign and constructs a presentation of 20 or 30 slides that focus on the most important opportunities, free from personal bias.

“It actually crafts not just the visualisation, but the story and the order in which the information is presented,” Sanderson explains. “CMOs don’t always want a ‘good’ story, they want the facts, so they can make decisions and address the areas of weakness. And so our system doesn’t really have an agenda, except to propose really solid insights.”
Nugit can absorb up to three years’ worth of data in just 15 minutes, and has developed modules that can assist in 50 marketing processes to date, with more to come.
“With machine learning we can look at hundreds of thousands of similar situations to give much better predictions,” Sanderson says.
In one example working with Facebook, Nugit applied its technology to a task that was taking analysts two weeks to complete, and delivered it in 10 minutes.
“Now Facebook licences our technology to increase its turnaround time between when they have a question and when they receive an answer,” Sanderson says.
An army of bots
One field of AI that is emerging rapidly is that of intelligent bots, as typified by platforms such as Apple’s Siri or Microsoft’s Cortana and the many other automated chatbots now appearing on websites.
Microsoft is betting heavily on bots, and recently created a new division to drive the technology into all Microsoft platforms and services through its Cognitive Services group. Hopefully the outcome will be something better than just ‘Clippy’ on steroids.
“We see artificial intelligence as something that can be infused into lots of different technologies and lots of different capabilities,” says Microsoft Australia’s chief technology officer, James Kavanagh. “We think AI is applicable to everybody and every application, and we are trying to make sure we research the foundations and then build it into all of our products and all of our capabilities.”
Kavanagh says a key role for AI will be in customer service, enabled through Microsoft’s Bot Framework. Whereas rules-based bots have been in existence for some time, these systems required human intervention to learn.
Kavanagh says the goal for Microsoft is to create bots that can learn for themselves.
“Now we are starting to think about how do we constantly adapt those, not just train them once on a model, but continuously think about how the model gets adapted based on new information that you get or responses to certain questions,” he says.
According to global head of data and artificial intelligence at Publicis.Sapient, Josh Sutton, this will lead to a new era of AI-driven conversational commerce, as people interact with websites or apps in the same way they might another person.
“What matters is that people are able to talk to computers the same way that they would talk to another person, and not feel like they have to press a button or answer a question in a very explicitly type of format, but can do wo whichever way they feel comfortable to convey a meaning,”: Sutton says. “The difference to a chatbot is the ability to listen to an open-ended conversation and extract insight or meaning from that.”

Much of the work in bot development today is on the side of brand marketers, but it’s not impossible that consumers might also find a role for bots.
Kavanagh points to the Sydney-based startup, Meeco, as an early indicator of a consumer bot revolution, through its technology for creating personally-controlled identity preferences that can be used to signal intent to service providers.
“It is viable to think of a scenario where you could have services offered, and an agent acting on your behalf to receive them,” Kavanagh says. “Even some of the flight booking services, in the examples we are seeing in the US and Europe, are not dissimilar to this.”
AI-based apps are already emerging that can perform tasks such as answering email and scheduling appointments. The eventually possibility is for AI to act as agents on behalf of consumers, possibly in the form or apps or bots that scour the web for the best deals on anything from consumer goods to electricity contracts.
According to vice-president of the International Federation for Information Processing, Prof Mike Hinchey, you can already see the beginning of this in the way consumers use apps today.
“You will have to be interacting with whatever apps people are using, because they won’t be using websites,” he says. “And it will be the app of the month. And the ‘in’ app will change not just based on what it does, but who is using it.”
All of this leads to a future which becomes stranger and stranger, with AIs being used by brands to craft more compelling offers, while personal AIs are sifting and comparing these offers.
So what use will there be for humans at all?
Us versus the machines
Discussion of AI in any profession immediately raises questions of whether it will begin to supplant the role of humans in those professions. While technology has traditionally created more jobs than it destroys, this is a tendency rather than a rule, and may not always hold true. And often, the jobs its creates require a very different skillset to those it destroys.
Oracle’s Griffith is an optimist.
“The development of technology in marketing, especially AI, increases the need for humans, because it opens up potential for things you weren’t able to do before,” Griffith says. “You still need humans to work out what you want to do with that.”
Not everyone is so positive about the AI-driven future, however. Speaking ahead of his appearance at the recent Creative Innovation 2016 conference in Melbourne, US-based researcher and author of the book Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future, Martin Ford, says marketing is going to be taken over by algorithms and become extremely data-driven.
First to feel the heat will be those marketers engaged in routine activities, as these will be automated, but Ford says it is only a matter of time before AI starts moving up the value stack.
“We see that in even the more creative areas,” he says. “There is going to be a continuing role there, but a question throughout the economy is going to be job destruction and job creation – how are those two going to weigh against each other. My view is in the long run, the destruction is going to outweigh the creation, and the jobs that are created are going to require more and more elite skill.”
Ultimately, Ford says it may come down to a race between whether human marketers can improve their skills at a faster rate than the machines can.
“Even if new jobs are created, the rate at which jobs are destroyed is going to be very rapid, and it is going to be very, very hard for people to keep up with that,” Ford says. “And a lot of the jobs that are going to be created in the future are not necessarily going to be acceptable to a lot of average people.”
So while AI may not wipe out the role of marketer, it will change the skill set required. “If you want to have a career in marketing, you are going to need to become much more quantitative and analytical and have at least an understanding of concepts like machine learning and AI and how they can be leveraged,” Ford says.
He provides some solace though for creative professionals. “You are in pretty good shape for the next 10 to 20 years,” Ford says. “Beyond that, who knows.
“I think we tend to overestimate how important that human element really is.”
