Product extention growth key for new Koala Australian marketing leader

Australian furniture retailer brings on dedicated VP marketing for local market as part of new org structure

A specific emphasis on growing brand and business in Australia through product extension is the key priority for Koala’s new VP marketing, Mark Khademi.

The new local marketing chief at the digital-led Australian furniture retailer started this week and reports into chief commercial officer, Rory Costello. The appointment follows the departure of inaugural chief marketing officer, Peter Sloterdyk, last August, and the decision by Koala to remove the CMO post in favour of a chief commercial officer with multiple county and global reports.

Costello took up the CCO post in September last year and oversees all brand, marketing and commercial teams worldwide. Other teams reporting into Costello include global brand, sales and data and analytics, with matrix structures in place for commercial teams in Japan, Korea and new markets.

As VP of marketing in Australia, Khademi is specifically focused on growing the Koala brand and business locally by expanding its sleep and furniture range to more rooms and categories, a company spokesperson confirmed.

He joins the Koala team from Optus, where he spent as year as associate director of marketing and acquisition. Khademi’s resume also includes senior marketing roles with amaysim, Mojo Power, Intelligent Investor and Australia Power and Gas.

Marketing prowess versus the enigma of the metaverse

Flash back to the classic film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Television-obsessed Mike insists on becoming the first person to be ‘sent by Wonkavision’, dematerialising on one end, pixel by pixel, and materialising in another space. His cinematic dreams are realised thanks to rash decisions as he is shrunken down to fit the digital universe, followed by a trip to the taffy puller to return to normal size.

More than money talks in sports sponsorship

As a nation united by sport, brands are beginning to learn money alone won’t talk without aligned values and action. If recent events with major leagues and their players have shown us anything, it’s the next generation of athletes are standing by what they believe in – and they won’t let their values be superseded by money.
