Macleod promoted to group exec marketing and corporate affairs at CBA

Commonwealth Bank CEO highlights CMO's brand, communication and marketing skills

Commonwealth Bank has elevated its chief marketing officer, Monique Macleod, to group executive of marketing and corporate affairs.

The company said Macleod would step into the role in mid-September, subject to regulatory approvals. The new role comes after a global recruitment search following the departure in June of former group executive for marketing and corporate affairs, Priscilla Sims Brown, to become president and CEO role at Amalgamated Bank in the US.

“As part of the marketing and corporate affairs senior leadership team, Monique has played a vital role in the revitalisation of the Commonwealth Bank brand and reputation over the past few years,” Commonwealth Bank CEO, Matt Comyn, said in a statement.

“Monique has brought teams together to directly influence how we engage retail and business customers, communicate with stakeholders and the broader community, and manage brand and reputation issues. Under her leadership, we have increased brand consideration, refreshed our brand for the first time in almost 30 years, and positioned the organisation as the largest supporter of women’s sport ever.”

The group executive of marketing and corporate affairs role was created by Comyn in mid-2019 and was prompted by the retirement of CBA’s group general counsel and group executive group director of corporate affairs, Anna Lenahan. The inaugural candidate was Sims Brown, who had spent the prior two years as CEO of US-based digital healthcare startup, Emerge.me. She was previously chief marketing officer and senior VP at AXA Financial in the US, and Lincoln National Corporation, where she oversaw business units, stakeholder engagement, marketing, corporate affairs, investor relations and business development functions.

Macleod joined CBA in 2008 as general manager of brand and sponsorship, working her way up to GM of consumer marketing then CMO in November 2017. Prior to this, she held various account director and manager roles with agencies including McCann Erickson, DDB and Ogilvy & Mather.

Macleod's marketing stewardship at CBA has seen her listed repeatedly in the CMO50 of Australia's most innovative and effective marketing leaders including top 25 positions in 2017, 2018 and 2020.

Marketing prowess versus the enigma of the metaverse

Flash back to the classic film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Television-obsessed Mike insists on becoming the first person to be ‘sent by Wonkavision’, dematerialising on one end, pixel by pixel, and materialising in another space. His cinematic dreams are realised thanks to rash decisions as he is shrunken down to fit the digital universe, followed by a trip to the taffy puller to return to normal size.

More than money talks in sports sponsorship

As a nation united by sport, brands are beginning to learn money alone won’t talk without aligned values and action. If recent events with major leagues and their players have shown us anything, it’s the next generation of athletes are standing by what they believe in – and they won’t let their values be superseded by money.
