Screen Australia appoints new marketing chief

Latest head of marketing and communications boasts of film production, creative arts, marketing and communications experience

Screen Queensland has brought on a new marketing and comms leader as part of trio of new executive-level appointments at the arts organisation.

Dr Belinda Burns, who has run her own film production company developing digital content for companies and government departments, has joined as head of marketing and communications. She was mostly recently the director of communications and engagement at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, overseeing brand, marketing, digital communications, events and admissions.

Dr Burns’ resume covers more than 20 years in marketing and communications both in-house and agency, including global PR director for Citigate in London, and general manager of a social marketing consultancy within the Ogilvy Group, The Reputation Group, spearheading federal and state government change campaigns. She’s also a published novelist and short fiction writer and has taught creative writing, film and literature studies at The University of Queensland.

In a statement, Screen Queensland said Dr Burns’ passion for the film industry and the arts and strong strategic and creative background made her an ideal choice for the job. The new role sees marketing and communications elevated to executive level.

“Belinda will be a major asset as we enhance our global reputation as a centre of film-making excellence and stay agile in this challenging age of COVID-19,” Screen Queensland CEO, Kylie Munnich, said.

For her part, Dr Burns said she was thrilled to be joining Screen Queensland. “I look forward to working with the team to leverage the great depth and diversity of film and TV talent our state has to offer,” she said. 

“Now, more than ever, Queensland is an ideal place to generate, develop and produce original and arresting content that the rest of the world wants to watch, and telling this story, both locally and internationally, will be an exciting part of my new role.”

Dr Burns is one of three new executive-level roles announced this week by Screen Queensland. The others are Jo Dillon, who has been promoted to chief creative officer, and Dee Mundell, who has switched from CFO to chief operating officer. 

“These changes will further strengthen our executive leadership team’s determination to stay future-focused on delivering our strategy for the Queensland screen industry,” Munnich said.
