CommSec brings on first GM marketing and strategy

Former Westpac, Ikea marketer joins Commonwealth Bank's online trading business

Commonwealth Bank’s online trading division, CommSec, has confirmed it’s brought on its first GM of marketing and strategy.

Rebecca Darley joins the group from Westpac Group, where she spent the last five years as head of marketing, planning and performance for St George Bank. Her marketing career also includes a stint as marketing director of Ikea, head of consumer communications at Vodafone, and head of acquisition marketing at Aussie Home Loans.

Darley has also been on the board of youth charity, Un Ltd, for the past six years.

The newly created position will see Darley reporting directly to CommSec managing director, Richard Burns.

Burns joined CommSec last year after a stint as GM of customer experience and technology at Aussie Home Loans, another CBA-owned business.

"I'm thrilled to be joining such an incredible business with a strong market position and extraordinary market share," Darley said in a statement.

"I've always been a vocal advocate for marketing's role as a strategic business partner and this is a rare opportunity to demonstrate the value in aligning marketing and business strategy. It's testament to the thought leadership of the senior executive.

"I can't wait to work alongside a truly diverse and incredibly talented team taking the business forward to the next exciting chapter."

Marketing prowess versus the enigma of the metaverse

Flash back to the classic film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Television-obsessed Mike insists on becoming the first person to be ‘sent by Wonkavision’, dematerialising on one end, pixel by pixel, and materialising in another space. His cinematic dreams are realised thanks to rash decisions as he is shrunken down to fit the digital universe, followed by a trip to the taffy puller to return to normal size.

More than money talks in sports sponsorship

As a nation united by sport, brands are beginning to learn money alone won’t talk without aligned values and action. If recent events with major leagues and their players have shown us anything, it’s the next generation of athletes are standing by what they believe in – and they won’t let their values be superseded by money.
