Nine has promoted to director of its in-house creative team, Linda Dubois, to the newly created role of chief marketing officer.

The new position sees Dubois responsible for Nine’s group marketing and brand strategy with a remit to accelerate audience and revenue growth across its full portfolio including television, radio, publishing and digital.

Dubois has been with Nine for nine years, initially joining the business as director of sales for Sydney. Most recently, she has been director of Powered, Nine’s creative team developing solutions for B2B customers across print, digital, social and TV. She has more than 25 years’ experience in Australian media and previously held strategy, sponsorship and sales roles at network 10, as well as marketing and promotions at Southern Cross Austereo.

“Liana is an exceptional media executive who has been pivotal in Nine’s evolution to the media company it is today,’ Nine CEO, Mike Sneesby, commented. “She is widely respected by her clients, industry peers and colleagues alike, and I couldn’t think of anyone more qualified to lead Nine’s marketing strategy and further accelerate our digital growth.”

Dubois said she was thrilled to be taking on the role of CMO, to further accelerate business growth “and revolutionise our role in the hearts and minds of consumers”. Dubois officially takes up the CMO reins on 11 July and will report to Sneesby.

“Nine’s strategic transformation has been significant, and I'm looking forward to continuing our digital transformation by leading a gifted team of marketers, influencing the cultural significance of Australia’s media company,” she said.

Dubois becomes only the second group CMO to be appointed across Australia’s free-to-air TV owners, alongside Seven West Media’s CMO, Charlotte Valente.

Recent acquisitions that have extended Nine’s portfolio into other media channels include the purchase of the Fairfax business in 2018, and Macquarie Media in 2020.

Marketing prowess versus the enigma of the metaverse

Flash back to the classic film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Television-obsessed Mike insists on becoming the first person to be ‘sent by Wonkavision’, dematerialising on one end, pixel by pixel, and materialising in another space. His cinematic dreams are realised thanks to rash decisions as he is shrunken down to fit the digital universe, followed by a trip to the taffy puller to return to normal size.

More than money talks in sports sponsorship

As a nation united by sport, brands are beginning to learn money alone won’t talk without aligned values and action. If recent events with major leagues and their players have shown us anything, it’s the next generation of athletes are standing by what they believe in – and they won’t let their values be superseded by money.
