Picture this. You’re at a Gourmerican burger joint chomping a cheeseburger, when an outspoken vegan friend starts preaching that you’re killing the planet. Last week, that same vegan downed a pricey glass of pinot before their flight to a far-flung destination, armed with their strongest mossie repellant and first aid kit. Anything amiss?
Many Facebook users got an unpleasant surprise on Monday as they logged into their accounts only to find that some of the services were not working properly.
Users started reporting issues around 8:45 a.m. Eastern Time and the problems seemed to last for about an hour. Users voiced their disapproval on Twitter, marking their messages with the #facebookisdown hashtag, as well reporting problems on performance monitoring sites such as Downdetector.com.
"Facebook is down! Now how will I be able to tell the world that I am drinking coffee on a Monday morning"! wrote one Facebook user in a humorous short message posted on Twitter, a competing social networking service.
Downdetector had reported receiving over 1,045 complaints just before 10 a.m. Monday morning. The rate of complaints subsided within the hour.
About 80 percent of the participants who submitted data to Downdetector reported not being able to post messages or pictures to the service. About 17 percent reported not being able to log in, and about 2 percent could not log into the service at all.
Facebook's uptime status page on Monday reported only that the company's payment services stopped working at 9 a.m.
Facebook did not respond immediately to a query.
